The fear of traveling alone is one of the main obstacles for people considering volunteering. We are all afraid, and even more so in situations that are completely strange and far from home, but fear limits us.

Here are a few tips that I think can help you overcome your fear of traveling alone

1. What are you afraid of?

Identify exactly what you're afraid of; safety? the plane? analyze whether dangerous or uncomfortable situations have a real chance of occurring or it's just your imagination playing havoc. Fear is simply the lack of certainty about something; we don't know what will happen. As long as you have a mentality that all the problems you face can be overcome, you are on the right track.

2. Embrace those feelings

It's okay to feel this way, being vulnerable is normal and human, what you don't have to do is stand still and conform, accept reality and move on.

3. Fight it

Be informed, ask, read; many times misinformation leads to panic or fear. Therefore, make small changes in your day-to-day life that will help you to overcome such great fears.

For example, go visit a nearby city by yourself, it will help you get used to being with yourself and put you in unexpected situations that will encourage your instincts.

4. Be inspired and rely on others

You are not the first person to have this kind of thought, many NGOs have Facebook groups, and often offer the possibility to get in touch with other future volunteers who are in the same situation as you.

Don't be ashamed, the experience of others is the best solution to calm your nerves and relieve your anxiety.

5. Remember! You will never be alone

Keep in mind that in the destination country you will be part of an organization, you share your experience with other volunteers. In addition, the NGO will have clearly told you how to get to your destination or will probably be waiting for you when you arrive.

Apply these tips, learn more about yourself and talk to as many people as you can, because this will be an experience to remember!
