About us

Who we are, what we do and why we do it

Gotongo is formed by a team of young nonconformists with the injustices and inequalities of our society, with a desire to work for something fulfilling and eager to contribute to add value for people like us.

We are volunteers in our own community, in organizations that carry out projects with which we feel identified because of their mission and values. In 2018 we backpacked through Asia and after hours of frustrating searches we found a school in Vietnam that welcomed us to give English classes to their students in exchange for accommodation.

The frustration and the difficulty which can arise when trying to find NGOs local and internationally are the reason why we embarked on this venture and the development of this platform.

Our purpose is to connect trustworthy non profit organizations, with people that would like to volunteer in programmes or projects that are aligned with their personal values and motivations.

That’s why, even though we are based in Spain, we want to reach out to all those people and organizations that share our vision.

We are a social company and therefore we allocate 51% of our dividends to economically help those projects that receive the best feedback from the volunteers.

For beginners, volunteering explained in a simple and short way:

What is volunteering and what types are there?

First of all, don’t think your a saviour! You are not going to change the world, nor a small town or your local community because you have done a few weeks or months volunteering.
But your attitude and, above all, your motivation will add up to a specific project. So get a move on and find which is your best option! What is required: people with an open attitude, respectful, responsible, supportive and committed.

Volunteering is a supportive and social activity, altruistic by essence, which is carried out through a public or private organization and in a specific project or programme. It’s a free, ethical choice, linked to your values and personal motivations.

There are different ways to get involved in projects or programs of non profit organizations and if we simplify them, they are based on 3: the duration of the relationship, the responsibility that the person acquires and the place where it takes place.

Difference between volunteering, voluntourism and cooperation

Volunteering can be done locally, in your own community. If you live in a city you won’t have to look far to find an organization with whose mission you feel identified and can get involved.

In a remote way you can volunteer virtually since there are tasks that do not necessarily require your physical presence, and having an internet connection is enough to carry them out: design tasks, programming, news writing, legal advice, accounting, tax, translations, etc...

And through international volunteering, you can live in another country, and collaborate with local NGOs in their projects, in minimum stays of 1 month and that usually include: previous training, continuous monitoring of the work done, an analysis of the impact that the programme generates in the local ecosystem, and finally a component of awareness and visibility in your immediate environment.

Volunteer tourism or Voluntourism

Do not confuse international volunteering with sustainable or responsible tourism. Voluntourism usually lasts a few weeks and has a function of raising awareness of the person travelling, thanks to knowledge of the activities carried out by local NGOs, immersion in the local culture without prejudging the reality, and without carrying out any specific task or work.

From Gotongo we promote voluntourism carried out as part of a project that provides development to the local community and is managed by NGOs or specialized agencies, and not as a fashion to live adventures or experiences believing that our simple presence will help.

International cooperation

This is the professionalization of volunteering. It is carried out by people with specific professional training and experience and who are employed by entities that promote economic, social and environmental development through different projects in impoverished countries.

How to choose volunteering?

  1. Think and consider why you want to volunteer.
  2. Understand the needs that are around you and decide with which one you feel most identified so as to invest your time and effort, taking into account your abilities and motivations.
  3. Look for different NGOs and contact them to better know the people that form them and the programmes they carry out. Remember - you don’t have to go to the other side of the world to get involved in projects where you can participate and get involved.
  4. Consider if there is room for you in a programme or project and what contribution you would make to that organization.
